$2.9-Billion Natural Gas Pipeline to Strengthen Alberta’s Industrial Heartland

JULY 8, 2026 / FORT SASKATCHEWAN, AB – A $2.9-billion natural gas infrastructure project is moving into construction in Alberta, adding significant new capacity to support industrial development and investment in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and across the province.

ATCO’s Canadian Utilities subsidiary has received final approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to construct and operate the Yellowhead Pipeline, a 235-kilometre, 36-inch natural gas transmission pipeline connecting the Peers area in west-central Alberta with the Fort Saskatchewan area within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.

The pipeline is designed to transport more than 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and will include a new compressor station. Construction is set to begin immediately, with approximately 2,000 direct construction jobs expected at peak. The project is targeted to enter service in November 2027.

Importantly, the pipeline is already fully contracted, demonstrating strong demand for additional natural gas transportation capacity as Alberta’s industrial economy expands.

For international investors, the project represents more than a major infrastructure investment. It is an enabler for the next wave of industrial development in Alberta, providing additional natural gas capacity to support energy-intensive projects and value-added processing.

The additional natural gas capacity is particularly significant for Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, the world’s highest performing energy and chemicals cluster and a growing destination for capital-intensive projects across petrochemicals, power generation, hydrogen, manufacturing, and other value-added industries.

With construction now underway, the Yellowhead Pipeline adds another major piece of energy infrastructure to Alberta’s investment landscape—expanding the capacity needed to support industrial growth, attract new capital and build on the province’s competitive energy advantage.
