AUGUST 22, 2025 / FORT SASKATCHEWAN, AB – The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) has approved ATCO Energy Systems’ Need Assessment Application for the Yellowhead Pipeline Project, a major development that will bring natural gas to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.
The 230-kilometre pipeline, stretching from Peers to Fort Saskatchewan, will deliver more than 1,200 terajoules (1.1 billion cubic feet) of natural gas per day to support industrial growth and community energy needs.
Once operational, the project is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct jobs and support an average of 12,000 jobs annually through related downstream investments. These downstream activities are projected to contribute $3.9 billion annually to Alberta’s GDP, reinforcing the Heartland’s role as a hub for energy, industrial production, and economic growth.
The Need Assessment Application is the first of two key regulatory filings that require approval from the AUC to advance the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, following approval of the separate facilities application later this year.
