Power GEneration
Low-Cost, Scalable Energy For Industrial Growth
Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH) provides access to a flexible power generation ecosystem through a combination of existing transmission infrastructure capacity and access to low-cost, secure energy feedstocks, supporting energy-intensive industries and emerging technologies.
Located in the heart of the world’s second-largest oil and gas reserves, AIH offers access to natural gas, liquids, and crude oil at competitive rates. Nearby access to large scale, operational carbon sequestration systems facilitates near term decarbonization options for a wide array of generation opportunities. These feedstocks support conventional and renewable electricity generation, enabling lower-emission project designs and sector-wide innovation.
AIH’s energy ecosystem supports a range of industrial and emerging sectors, including petrochemical facilities, metallurgical refineries, hydrogen plants, and data centres. The region offers competitive feedstocks, reliable grid access, and opportunities for low-carbon integration, providing the infrastructure needed to scale energy-intensive operations efficiently.

Low-Cost Feedstocks
Alberta’s abundant natural gas supply supports some of the most affordable electricity generation in North America, offering cost certainty for long-term industrial operations. AECO Hub rates for Natural Gas are the lowest in the world, outside of Russia. Alberta natural gas traded 41% below U.S. prices on average between December 2015 and December 2025, with monthly spreads ranging from slightly above to more than 90% below Henry Hub.
Natural Gas Co-Generation with CCUS Integration
Co-generation facilities in the region can connect to existing CCUS infrastructure, enabling lower-emission electricity generation and integration with industrial decarbonization initiatives while reducing total project capital cost.
Data Centre Suitability
Cold climate, low-cost power, availability of water, and proximity to urban fibre infrastructure support data centre operations efficiently.
Renewable Integration & VPPAs
Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) allow for renewable energy sourcing while maintaining grid access, providing operational flexibility and alignment with ESG standards.
Streamlined Regulatory Path
AIH is Alberta’s only Designated Industrial Zone, a status that provides exemptions from certain regulatory processes, including Electric Energy Land Use and Visual Assessment Regulation (EELUVAR). This makes co-locating renewable energy sources in the region more straightforward than elsewhere in the province.
