Alberta’s Heartland: Feedstocks, Incentives, Decarbonization
Welcome, Energy & Petrochemical leaders
Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH) is Canada’s largest and most established hydrocarbon processing region. Home to $50 billion in industrial assets, abundant low-cost feedstocks, and an advanced decarbonization ecosystem, AIH offers global investors the scale, infrastructure, and optionality needed to accelerate industrial projects.
Low-Cost, Secure Feedstocks
Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH) sits close to one of the world’s largest proven natural gas reserves, offering investors access to abundant, low-cost, and stable feedstock supply.
Anchored by the AECO pricing hub—historically among the lowest natural gas benchmarks in the world—AIH provides long-term cost certainty for energy-intensive operations such as petrochemicals, hydrogen, fertilizers, and clean fuels. Alberta natural gas traded 41% below U.S. prices on average between December 2015 and December 2025, with monthly spreads ranging from slightly above to more than 90% below Henry Hub.

With direct pipeline access to production basins and proximity to liquids and crude oil supply, AIH delivers integrated feedstock flexibility that few jurisdictions can match. These advantages position AIH as a North American hub that rivals global energy centres in both cost efficiency and carbon performance.
AIH’s natural gas ecosystem also supports next-generation low-carbon energy production. Existing carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) infrastructure enables investors to pair natural gas use with near-term decarbonization options, lowering both emissions and overall project risk.
Rapid Market Access
AIH sits at the heart of a world-class North American transportation network, connecting:
▫️Highways and pipelines across Canada and the U.S.
▫️Two Class I rail providers serving continental markets
▫️Pacific Coast ports in British Columbia for access to Asia
Exports from the region create a structural advantage for global supply chains. Clustered infrastructure and export-ready facilities let investors rapidly deploy and scale high-value projects.

Operational-Scale Decarbonization Pathways
AIH offers one of the most advanced and accessible CCUS ecosystems in the world—a critical differentiator for global energy investors seeking to scale industrial projects while meeting ESG and emissions reduction goals.
AIH is home to proven, operational-scale CCUS infrastructure, with multiple projects offering open-market access to carbon sequestration. This enables industrial developers to integrate low-carbon solutions with minimal additional capital, accelerating timelines and improving project economics:
- Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) – a 240 km pipeline transporting up to 14.6 million tonnes CO₂ per year for enhanced oil recovery and storage. This facility is plug-and-play, allowing new projects to sequester carbon with minimal additional capital.
- Designated Carbon Storage Hub – AIH is a Government of Alberta Designated Carbon Storage Hub, with six CCUS projects providing a framework for industrial carbon sequestration. Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, the first project to receive FID, is currently under construction and expected to be operational by 2028, offering open-market access to sequestration services. The other approved projects create future optionality for industrial investors.
- Quest Carbon Capture and Storage – capturing and storing over 1 million tonnes of CO₂ per year since 2015, demonstrating proven large-scale CCUS capability. (Not open to new investors.)
