NOVEMBER 21, 2025 / STURGEON COUNTY, AB – Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA) acknowledges the recent decision by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) regarding the proposed Greenlight Electricity Centre Project, a new natural-gas-fuelled power generation facility to be built approximately 10 kilometres east of Gibbons.

The IAAC completed its review of the project, determining that any potential adverse effects within federal jurisdiction would be limited or appropriately managed through existing federal and provincial regulatory frameworks. As a result, a comprehensive assessment under the Impact Assessment Act is not required.

Proposed by Greenlight Electricity Centre Limited Partnership, the project includes four combined-cycle power generation units—each pairing a natural gas turbine with a steam turbine—to deliver up to 1,864 megawatts of electricity. Designed for long-term operation, the facility is expected to run for at least 40 years and would be located within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, an area supported by established industrial infrastructure and access to essential utilities.

IAAC’s 52-day review engaged federal experts, other jurisdictions, stakeholders, the public, and Indigenous Peoples to evaluate potential impacts and confirm that they can be addressed through mechanisms such as the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994, Alberta’s Water Act, and Alberta’s Historical Resources Act.

The Greenlight Electricity Centre Project highlights the continued growth of power generation and energy infrastructure in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. With strong regulatory oversight, access to skilled labour, and proximity to major industrial operations, the region remains well-positioned to support responsible development that contributes to Canada’s economic and industrial strength.
