G&W Plans New Rail Terminal at Gasia Energy Complex

Railcars on a railway track

SEPTEMBER 11, 2025 / STRATHCONA COUNTY, AB – Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA) welcomes the announcement that Alberta Heartland Railway (AHR), a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Canada Inc., has signed agreements with Gasia Energy Corp. to develop a multiservice rail terminal at Gasia’s planned energy complex in Strathcona County. The project includes a long-term lease of more than 50 acres for the construction and operation of the terminal, which will serve Gasia and other AHR customers.

Strategically located east of the North Saskatchewan River along Highway 830, the terminal sits near some of the largest industrial facilities in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and connects directly to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National (CN) rail lines. Once complete, the terminal will feature multiple loop tracks, rail-to-truck transloading, and storage for up to 1,200 railcars, enhancing freight-rail options for regional businesses.

The terminal will serve as the anchor facility for Gasia’s Homestead diluent recovery unit (DRU) project, enabling Canadian producers to move heavy crude and other products efficiently across North America. Construction is expected to proceed in multiple phases as approvals are secured.

The project further underscores Alberta’s Industrial Heartland’s role as Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region and a growing hub for energy, logistics, and industrial innovation.
